Sun Keyword Correspondences and Associations
Because the Sun nourishes so much life through its light and heat, it makes sense that the Sun has been worshiped for so long. The Sun “represents spiritual power, the heart or centre, the radiation of energy. It also embodies the idea of consciousness, the reality of the soul and spirit” (Practical Planetary Magick). The Sun is obviously connected to power and so it naturally associates to royalty and wealth, giving it the correspondences of advancement and success.
Another concept connected to the Sun is that of friendship, this correspondence comes from the fact that friendships add light, joy, and growth to our lives much like the Sun does. The Sun is also associated with positivity and joy as sunlight itself has many benefits. The lack of sunlight is often felt through Seasonal Affectiveness Disorder (SAD).
As with many things, too much light can be harmful and so a balance needs to be maintained. The negative associations of the sun include insatiable ambition, boastfulness, imperiousness, pride, and tyranny.
The Sun in the Chart
In astrology, the Sun is a personal planet and represents the story you tell about yourself, not the stories that others have about you.
The Sun is the supreme figure in a birth chart, the primary indicator of an individual’s personality, sense of self, identity, and mode of expression in the world. It shows your role in this incarnation, how you envision yourself, how you want others to see you, what you aspire to be and achieve. It also represents your outer self, that is, the side you express in public. The Sun’s energy is usually felt to be life-enhancing, vitalizing, beneficial, and uplifting.
If you meet someone whose Sun makes a favorable connection with your birth chart, you’ll probably feel positively disposed toward that person; they will tend to bring out the best in you. Sun signs are not limited to people; countries and cities have them too. They show how they view and express themselves, what they value, how they conduct their affairs, where they’re likely to invest their energy and resources, how they interact with other nations, and more.
The Solar Symbol

The symbol of the Sun is a circle with a dot in the center. This circle represents the life-giving energies of the infinite and the cyclical nature of life, death, and rebirth. The dot in the middle emphasizes the primal nature of those energies. The disconnect between the dot and the circle represents the universal way solar energy emanates.
Solar Magic
The Sun illuminates, individualizes, or blinds what it touches.Because the Sun’s vibration is outgoing, invigorating, and expansive, it can augment magic that involves growth, self-expression, and most outer-world activities. Solar energy is usually considered positive: an asset in most endeavors. The Sun can help you get a job, increase your prosperity, improve your public image, spark your creativity, aid in business ventures, or strengthen your physical condition.
If you want to encourage growth, perform magic between the winter solstice and the summer solstice. If you want to decrease something, perform magic between the summer solstice and the winter solstice.
The Sun will help you be confident and aid in your success.
You can also work with the Sun's daily phases or with the Sun as he moves through the signs over the year. [To be expanded upon]
Planetary Square for the Sun
Magical number squares are mathematical objects composed of a square grid with equal sized rows and columns that are filled with as many consecutive natural numbers (starting with 1) that it takes to fill. Each row and column sums to the same number. Frequently, the diagonals do as well.
The Sun's square is 6x6 and has the natural numbers 1 through 36 (6²).
The rows, columns, and diagonals all add up to 111 and the entire square sums to 666.
To fill the Sun's square, place 1 in the top right corner. The rest of the numbers are filled in going from the top/bottom rows to the middle, leaving one or two spaces in between until reaching the middle. Then the spaces are filled going from the middle to the top/bottom, alternating between the two.

Orphic Hymn 7: To the Sun [Helios]
Hear golden Titan, whose eternal eye with broad survey, illumines all the sky.
Self-born, unwearied in diffusing light, and to all eyes the mirrour of delight:
Lord of the seasons, with thy fiery car and leaping coursers, beaming light from far:
With thy right hand the source of morning light, and with thy left the father of the night.
Agile and vig'rous, venerable Sun, fiery and bright around the heav'ns you run.
Foe to the wicked, but the good man's guide, o'er all his steps propitious you preside:
With various founding, golden lyre, 'tis mine to fill the world with harmony divine.
Father of ages, guide of prosp'rous deeds, the world's commander, borne by lucid steeds,
Immortal Jove [Zeus], all-searching, bearing light, source of existence, pure and fiery bright
Bearer of fruit, almighty lord of years, agil and warm, whom ev'ry pow'r reveres.
Great eye of Nature and the starry skies, doom'd with immortal flames to set and rise
Dispensing justice, lover of the stream, the world's great despot, and o'er all supreme.
Faithful defender, and the eye of right, of steeds the ruler, and of life the light:
