Saturn Keyword Correspondences and Associations

Saturn is the second largest planet in our solar system. In the past, Saturn was the farthest planet visible from Earth so it set the boundaries of the universe known to man. As such, Saturn is associated to time, formation, and restriction.

These qualities came together to teach balance and self-discipline as well as how to deal with the material world. Using structures and laws, frameworks are provided to help with functioning in society and with duty in social/personal situations. With these, people can understand how things work and will be able to move beyond the limits of the current situation.

To help maintain the balance in one’s life, patience, prudence, and practicality are needed. Saturn's influences are a stark contrast to Jupiter's expansiveness: it places restrictions on whatever it touches.

Saturn is also associated with death as it takes about 29.5 years to orbit the Sun, almost the same as the average lifespan of a person in the Dark Ages.

The negative aspects of Saturn include anguish, desperation, lying, madness, melancholy, obstinacy, rigidity, sadness, and tedium. Some of these qualities can be permanently removed, but some like melancholy and sadness persist and must be countered whenever they come up. Saturn doesn’t actually cause problems: it merely shows us the results of our actions, which is why it’s connected with fate and karma.

Saturn In the Chart

Its position in your birth chart shows where you may undergo challenges and limitations, feel inadequate, or be required to work hard. Saturn brings valuable learning experiences, enabling you to grow and develop strengths through your efforts. If you meet someone whose natal Saturn makes a stressful connection with a planet in your chart, you’ll probably view that person as demanding, unloving, or limiting in some way. On the positive side, this person may provide security or stability.

Saturn is also known as the Great Malefic.

The Saturnian Symbol

planetary symbol for saturn

The symbol of Saturn has the cross representing Earth along with a crescent representing the Moon. Here, the cross dominates the crescent so that matter and form dominate time. The crescent is pointing inward to show Saturn's limiting nature.

Saturnian Magic

Saturn constricts, fortifies, or coaches what it touches.

Because Saturn is associated with endings, it can be an asset with banishing rituals or when you need to let go of something. Its power is also useful in protection spells and can help you bind an enemy, establish boundaries, or build inner strength. Saturn can be advantageous in practical matters or when order and pragmatism are needed. Tap into its beneficial associations when laying foundations in business, financial, or personal situations. This planet can also help you build structures, set limits, get organized, plan for the future, create goals, or ground yourself in the material realm.

Saturn will help you to be determined, and also to get justice on those who’ve wronged you.

Planetary Square for Saturn

Magical number squares are mathematical objects composed of a square grid with equal sized rows and columns that are filled with as many consecutive natural numbers (starting with 1) that it takes to fill. Each row and column sums to the same number. Frequently, the diagonals do as well.

Saturn's square is 3x3 and has the natural numbers 1 through 9 (3²).

The rows, columns, and diagonals all add up to 15 and the entire square sums to 45.

To fill Saturn's square, place the 1 directly below the center then fill in a mostly downward diagonal pattern. When the bottom is reached, move to the top of the next column.

Orphic Hymn 12: To Saturn [Kronos]

Ethereal father, mighty Titan, hear, great fire of Gods and men, whom all revere:
Endu'd with various council, pure and strong, to whom perfection and decrease belong.
Consum'd by thee all forms that hourly die, by thee restor'd, their former place supply;
The world immense in everlasting chains, strong and ineffable thy pow'r contains
Father of vast eternity, divine, O mighty Saturn [Kronos], various speech is thine:
Blossom of earth and of the starry skies, husband of Rhea, and Prometheus wife.
Obstetric Nature, venerable root, from which the various forms of being shoot;
No parts peculiar can thy pow'r enclose, diffus'd thro' all, from which the world arose,
O, best of beings, of a subtle mind, propitious hear to holy pray'rs inclin'd;
The sacred rites benevolent attend, and grant a blameless life, a blessed end.
